Project Overview:
The Eco-Hub has created a multi-use, centrally located space for all student-related environmental activity. The hub will help catalyse a broader culture of practical environmental action amongst staff, students, and the community.
Activities the space is used for include:
- Bike Repair Hub
- Swap Shop Rail & Clothing Repair Station
- Plant Swap
- Tool/Seed library
- Event Space
- Food Co-op & Community Fridge with fairtrade coffee provision and basic kitchen provision
The project works to create this space involved:
- A Kitchen fit out - fabrication of units and shelves
- Upgrades to LED lighting and detector
- Increased Power & Data
- New wheel-chair accessible door with push button door opener
- Install of Shelving Wall and Projector
- Repainting of Walls
- Installation of New Signage
- Ventilation
Considerable thought was given to incorporating sustainability during the design of this project. There was a strong emphasis on re-using existing materials and equipment where possible. Second-Hand and reclaimed furniture, fridges and projector was used. Microwave and kitchen equipment due to be thrown out was acquired and repurposed. Ceiling tiles thrown out from a previous project were obtained and reused. Shelving from down takings from the upper levels of the Boyd Orr were reinstalled. LED lighting and fittings were also installed as part of the project, further adding to the positive sustainability impact of the project.
